Curriculum Council Minutes

November 28, 2007

HS Media Center – 3:10 PM

 

Members present:  Baker, Bearden, Konieczka, Houk, Postema, Goodspeed, Volk, Salogar, Sheahan, Merritt, Meier, Schmidtendorff, Bongard, Heinlein, Winsor, Wilson, C. Mungall, Avery, Grifka.

 

  1. Meeting was brought to order, agenda approved.

 

  1. The minutes from October meeting were approved.

 

  1. Departmental updates were given:

 

  1.  
    1. Language Arts – Discussion was about EOC exams and they were directed to the MDE website for help.

 

    1. Social Studies – Department met with a textbook representative, next early release will deal with GLCEs.

 

    1. Science – They are expecting K-7 GLCEs soon from MDE, they are now determining 8th grade curriculum. They are also considering prerequisites for science classes.

 

    1. Math – Spent time looking at textbook differences.

 

    1. Health/PE- They spent time adding the 6th grade to Teacher Ease. The Reproductive Health Committee needs to meet to approve a new text at the high school.

 

    1. Fine Arts – Their meeting dealt with meeting state benchmarks and exit outcome requirements.

 

    1. Technology- Familiar issues exist at elementary labs – adding an applied technology class to classrooms in the high school was discussed.

 

    1. Special  Education- Discussed technology applications. High school

Special Education students in 9th grade will not receive a diploma without meeting course requirements. IEPs will not trump state requirements.

 

    1. Early Childhood –Results of program quality assessment was reviewed.

 

  1. Items from the Superintendent:
    1. Mr. Mungall discussed what will be happening with sinking fund projects. Heating systems at the elementary, water heaters and windows/doors are key issues at the high school.

 

    1. Gratiot County Foundation classroom projects/grants are available. The grants run from $400 - $800 in terms of awards.

 

    1. School improvement: Should Fulton schools go with NCA or Education Yes! Programs? There is a difference in the cost to the district. Guide School improvement is also another option.
