Language Arts Committee Minutes

October 14, 2009

Members Present: Christy Thelen, Chad Walden, Linda Hoffman, Jen

Heinze, Drew Sayers, Cari Smith, Crystal Ballivian, Jim

Goodspeed, Ellie Freed

Textbooks - The high school has top choices from last year in ChadŐs room that teachers are welcome to come look through. In the elementary building one teacher from each grade level has the top two selections from last year in their room. Next month we will meet as individual buildings rather than as an entire committee to look over textbook selections and see where we need to go from there. Chad shared the form to request new textbooks with the group and made a copy for Christy. We need to have our top two selections made and presented to building administrators by March. A few questions to discuss next time we meet:

Do more samples need to be requested?

Are novels included in the order?

What building does 6th grade place their order with?

Power Standards – Chad received the power standards from Sonia Lark and has shared them with other committee members. It looks as if they are more for the high school to use rather than middle school or elementary.

Spanish – Next semester Crystal Ballivian may be able to have a few of her advanced Spanish students come over to the elementary building to teach Spanish to the younger students

Common Editing Marks – Jen Heinze brought over a poster that she uses in her classroom when students need to edit their papers. It appears as if we are all using the same editing marks. Copies were made and given to each member and will be shared with other faculty members in each building.

Next Month – We will meet in our own buildings to look over textbooks.
