Band Objective

1.     Students will gain the love and appreciation of music through actual performance.

2.   Students will develop various skills in wind and or percussion instruments.

3.   Students will provide musical needs for the school, community, and themselves.

4.   Students will learn about music theory, history, and other music cultures, throughout the school year.

5.   To provide students a warm and colorful atmosphere, self-expression, and healthy social environment.

6.   To develop responsibility, teamwork, interaction, and a healthy emotional outlet.

Attendance

It is important that all students come prepared, on time, and most importantly, attend everyday, in rehearsals and performances.  Each individual is a part of a team who has a goal of reaching maximum achievement.  With the proper planning conflicts can be avoided.

●Any un-excused absence from a performance will result in a zero for that event.*

●Conflicts with school activities and a performance is the studentŐs responsibility to inform all parties as soon as possible so that a solution can be worked out. There will be an alternate assignment for any absence from a required event.*

*Performances include: Home football games, playoff home football games, marching or concert festivals, graduation, parades, and anything else that is on the schedule for a specific school year.

Any excused absence must follow this procedure:

1.     Director must be notified at lease 24 hours in advance, unless it is an emergency.

2.   The notification must be in writing.

3.   It must be approved by the director.

4.   You will have a make-up writing assignment to complete in replace of absence.

Award Letters

Requirement for a letter in Band for High School Students

1.     No un-excused absences

2.   Maintain at least a B average

3.   Earn at least 50 band points in one school year.

Grading

30%- Daily Class Participation.  This includes daily attendance, attitude, and daily participation in the classroom.

35%- Performances.  This includes any concerts, marching or concert festivals, home football games, any home playoff football games, graduation ceremonies, and anything on the schedule that is required for a particular school year.

35%- Playing Tests.  This includes two exams, one at the end of each semester, and any playing exams for chair auditions.

Uniforms

Marching Uniforms will be issued either before or after band camp.  The uniforms will be stored in the High School Band Room and students will change into their uniform at school. After the performance the students will put the uniform back into their specific garment bag and place their hat and uniform neatly where they belong.  Students are required to wear black shoes and black socks that should be purchased on your own.  When students are in full uniform they are not allowed to wear jewelry, nail polish, and all hair must be put up in the hat unless it is too short.  Students are also responsible for any damage to the uniform beyond normal wear and tear. For example, if you get a stain on your uniform you must get it dry cleaned right away, especially before our next performance.  I would appreciate it if each band member would not eat or drink while in uniform (water is the exception).  This will eliminate a trip to the dry-cleaners at your expense and promote the longevity of the uniforms.  Before the season starts you will be required to pay a $12.00 maintenance dry-cleaning fee.

Concert Uniforms for High School and Middle School

Ladies are to wear a black skirt which needs to be longer than Knee length or black slacks, not black jeans. Ladies should also wear a black shirt, black or nude nylons, and black dress shoes.

Gentlemen are to wear black slacks, not black jeans, and a white dress shirt with long sleeves, a black solid tie, solid black shoes, and black socks.

** All concert uniforms are to be purchased on your own. If there are any problems with this please contact the band director**

Behavior Policy

In the world of music listening is one of the key elements in making a successful program.  Therefore, talking in between songs or when I am rehearsing a particular section it is not acceptable.  If talking or your attitude becomes a problem in the classroom the studentŐs grade will drop 5% for everyday the student has a problem.  If it still continues parents will be contacted and or the student will be sent to the Self Discipline Room.

Instrument Policy

Individual band members using instruments owned by the school assume responsibility for any damage to the instrument.  This includes drumsticks, mouthpieces, instruments, amplifiers, and anything else that belongs to the band program.  Every summer they are maintained and repaired.  In addition, if your student loses the instrument they are responsible for replacing the instrument and or parts.  Percussion students will be responsible for their own concert and marching snare sticks.  Individual band members must sign the contract in order to use a school instrument.

Music Policy

Individual band members using original music owned by the school assume responsibility for any lost or stolen music.  To replace the original missing part will cost you$4.00 for each piece of music and $1.00 for any lost copy of music.

Upgrade Suggestions for Personal Instruments

For clarinets: One of the following Vandoren (B45, M13, M14) Richard Hawkins, Larry Combs Models. For Saxophones: Selmer C-Star. For Trumpet: Bach 5C or 3C. For French Horn: Farkus MDC. For Trombone/Euphonium: Bach 6 ½ AL or 4G. For Tuba: Conn Helleberg7B.  I would prefer clarinets and saxophones to utilize Vandoren Reeds or Mitchell Lurie.  Some suggestive ligatures at the the High School Level are Bonade, Rovner, Vandoren, or H&B.  When you start on your instrument we keep them very simple and basic in order to be affordable.  The mouthpieces that we start you on are selected to match much smaller faces and smaller lungs. You have in essence Ňgrown out of them.Ó  The previous suggestions are the best way to step up to a high school caliber equipment and sound production without buying a new instrument.  The cost of the above items will run about the same cost as a pair of high quality athletic shoes (and they are the last upgrade you need to make). Without quality gear, your ability to produce an excellent sound (the most important thing!) is severely limited.
