I. Note to Parents
You are the most important and influential people in your children's lives. Your children need you to be interested and involved in their activities, their academic progress, and in the planning of their futures. During their high school years, your children also need you to take an active interest in their preparation and planning for college. As parents, there are many things you can do to insure that your children will be prepared for college. You can see that they take the appropriate courses, sign up for the right tests, and complete the necessary forms.
II. The Academic Record
A. Grade Point Average:
1. The average of a student's 9 week grades, beginning with their freshman year.
2. Note the following scale is used: A= 4.0, A-= 3.67, B+= 3.33, B=3.0,
B-= 2.67, C+= 2.33, C= 2.0, C-= 1.67, D+= 1.33, D= 1.0
3. College applications are normally filled out during the fall of the senior
year, the GPA through the end of the junior year is important.
B. Class Rank
1. The way in which schools show how each student stands
academically when compared to another through the use of each student's GPA.
2. This is a very important statistic used by colleges during the admissions process.
3. Scholarships many times will use this information when determining
recipient.
C. Student Transcript
1. The official document which contains a student's academic record during
high school.
2. All post-secondary schools will request an official student transcript
during their application process.
3. Parents and students may request an unofficial transcript at anytime.
D. College Recommended Courses
1. Most universities recommend student's complete the following classes to help
prepare them for the demands of post-secondary courses:
a. 4 years of English
b. 3 years of Math, including Algebra and higher
c. 3 years of Science
d. 2-3 years of Foreign Language
e. 3 years of Social Studies
E. Four-Year Plan (EEDP- Educational Employment Development Plan)
1. A tentative academic plan laying out a student's four years in
high school.
2. Developed in the 8th grade, using the student's career choice,
interests and academic offerings.
3. This document needs to be revised each school year in the spring
during student registration.

III. College Testing available to Fulton High School Students
A. PLAN
1. Available to sophomores in the fall.
2. A practice test for the ACT which provides information concerning the
following academic areas:
a. English
b. Math
c. Science Reasoning
d. Reading
3. An interest inventory is a component of the test which provides
information on career exploration and career planning.
B. PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test)
1. Available to juniors in the fall (October)
2. A practice test for the SAT
3. The results are used to determine National Merit semi-finalists
C. SAT I (Scholastic Assessment Test)
1. A college entrance exam
2. Available to juniors and seniors
D. ACT (American College Test)
1. A college entrance exam
2. Available to juniors and seniors
3. In Michigan, the sum of the scores is used to determine eligibility for
Michigan Competitive Scholarship (a need based award)
E. SAT II Subject Tests
1. One hour tests in different subject areas which measures their
knowledge.
IV. Financial Aid and Scholarship Information
A. Free Application for Federal Student Aid
1. The form the federal government uses to determine a student's family
estimated contribution.
2. Students and their parents will need to have their income tax
information available to complete the form.
3. This form needs to be filled out by the February 15 deadline
4. The form is available in the guidance office normally by Christmas

B. Financial Aid Night
1. A representative from a local community college spends an evening
with Fulton students and parents discussing the topic of financial aid,
the Free Application for Student Aid and will answer questions.
C. Scholarships
1.University Scholarships
a. Each individual university will have their own scholarships.
b. Each student is responsible for contacting the financial aid
office for the university of their choice to receive information.
c. It is very important to be aware of deadlines.
2. Local Scholarships
a. Seniors at Fulton High School are very fortunate to have the
opportunity to apply for local scholarships.
b. Deadlines are very important.
