Directions/Information
Directional Terms:
Anterior (ventral) – towards the front
Posterior (dorsal) – toward the back
Superior
– above (in relation to another part)
Inferior
– below (in relation to another part)
Medial – towards the center of the body (an
imaginary center line)
Lateral – away from the center of the body
Proximal
– part is closer to the point of attachment and/or the torso
Distal - part
is farther from the point of attachment and/or the torso
Superficial – near the surface
Deep – away from the surface
Central – Located near the center of the body
or organ
Peripheral - Located away from the center of the
body or organ
Body Planes
Sagittal (median) plane
– divides body into left and right halves
Frontal (coronal) plane – divides the
body into front and back halves
Transverse (horizontal) plane – divides the body
into top and bottom halves
